Personal Experience:
I sat this exam as an intern whilst I was working on my
final 3 month post in Portiuncula University Hospital on an Obs&Gynae
Rotation. I decided to sit the exam at the last minute before the closing date
if I recall correctly. It was less than two months from when I started studying
until I sat the exam. So I didn’t have as much time as I would have liked to
prepare. I was also commuting an hour each way to work so I was limited in how
many hours I was going to have to get ready. I used to slip away from theatre when
there were breaks in between cases or on my lunch break and study for 20-40
minutes depending on the gap between cases or jobs needing done on the ward. In
the evenings I would try to do 1-2 hours either in the hospital library or at
home. On the weekends I reckon I spent about 3 hours a day max getting through
the questions on the Pastest MCQ bank and reading over topics. I found that
there was a lot of repetition in the bank which was helpful. The content is very
much basic medical sciences such as anatomy, microbiology etc. I used the USMLE
first aid textbook as a reference which I found very helpful and still use to
this day. I also used my Gray’s anatomy when studying the anatomy MCQs. I didn’t
feel there was any quick way around the anatomy side of things unfortunately. On
the day of the exam I found the questions to be very similar to those from the MRCEM
exam prep which was great.
Recommendations:
Time-frame: 2-3 months
Study Plan:
1. 1. Use the MRCEM Exam Prep MCQ bank from Day 1 –
the MCQs are very similar on the day of the exam.
2. 2. Use helpful resources
to bulk up the answers you read on the MCQ bank. I recommend Gray’s Anatomy and
USMLE first aid.
3. 3. Plan your study: I
would recommend getting good study in 4 days of the week (I always take Friday off for example) and again on the weekends.
Aim for 2 hours on weekdays and 3 hours a day minimum on weekends. See how long
it takes you to complete ten MCQs and review the answers and this should guide
how long your study will take over the weeks.
4. 4. Aim to complete the bank
twice at least.
